The International Max Planck Research School for Demography (IMPRSD) now has an open call for applications for their summer program, to be held May to July 2011 in Rostock, Germany. In addition I would like to call your attention to the openings in the European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD), school year 2011-12.

1. European Doctoral School of Demography: Call for Applications

Lowest Low Fertility

This workshop was organized by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock under the auspices of EAPS. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss topics, frameworks and methods that can be used in research aiming to better understand and possibly explain the low level of fertility in many Western countries. Fourteen papers were presented and discussed by some 25 participants.

Family – Household Modelling and Applications

This workshop brought together renowned scientists in the field and promising young scholars to review state-of-the-art methods and applications of family/household modeling with an eye to setting out a course for further research. The workshop focussed on three main topics: a) theoretical questions concerning the effect of demographic changes on family and household structure; b) conducting policy analysis to achieve sound policy-making; c) forecasting family/household structure for socio-economic planning.

The Anthropological Demography of Europe: state of the art and perspectives

Anthropological demography asks how population processes and socio-cultural practices affect each other. Demographic models that do not acknowledge the importance of the cultural embedding of behaviour tend to reduce cultural meanings and practices to a list of traits that are added to standard institutional and individual background characteristics. In this representation of culture, behaviour is guided by a system of discrete rules and beliefs into which individuals have been socialised.
