Life Tables in Europe: data, methods and models

This workshop was organized by the EAPS Working Group on Health, Morbidity and Mortality Differentials in Europe in collaboration with the Institute of Statistics of the Catholic University of Louvain. The scientific Program included sessions on period life tables, cohort life tables, life tables by causes of death, competing risks, and expectation of healthy life. A report was published in the EAPS-newsletter (1994, 2).

Health, Morbidity and Mortality in the 21st century, A New Age

The next workshop of the EAPS Working Group 'Health, Morbidity and Mortality' will take place in Riga at the University of Latvia from Friday, 4th September till Sunday, 6th September, 2009.

Reconstituted Families in Europe

This workshop discussed the state of the art of both theoretical and empirical research on this topic, in European countries. Sessions treated theoretical and methodological issues, characteristics, trends, experiences, consequences and policy issues. The workshop was organized by the Population and Family Study Center (CBGS), under the auspices of EAPS. The scientific Program included sessions on conceptualisation and perspectives, law and legal settlements, socio-demographic profiles, dynamics and experiences.

One Parent Families

Under the auspices of EAPS, the Population and Family Study Centre (CBGS) of the Ministry of the Flemish Community organized this workshop on the phenomenon and problems of, as well as the policies regarding one parent families. Some 25 scientific contributions from 15 countries were discussed. A summary report was published the EAPS newsletter (1986, 2). The proceedings were published in: Fred Deven and Robert Cliquet (eds.) (1986), One-parent families in Europe: trends, experiences, implications. The Hague / Brussels: NIDI CBGS Publications # 15, 365 pp.

Mortality and Healthcare Systems in Developed Countries

This workshop was organized under the auspices of EAPS by the Demographic Coordination Council and the Institute of Sociology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Social Medicine Society at the Bulgarian Academy of Medicine, and the Bulgarian Central Board of Statistics. Eleven sessions dealt with such topics as mortality trends in developed countries, differential mortality, child mortality, psycho-sociological aspects, health services, modelling and forecasting. A summary report was published in the EAPS newsletter (1991, 2).

Morbidity and Mortality Registration of Chronic Diseases

This workshop was organised by the Benelux Group on Mortality, under the auspices of EAPS. The international comparability of statistical and registration data and possibilities for mortality research were the main focus of this workshop. A selection of the papers was published in the Dutch Tijdschrift voor Sociale Gezond heidzorg (Journal of Social Health Care). The proceedings were published by the Jan van Reek and Dion Veys (eds) (1986), Proceedings Workshop on morbidity and mortality registration of chronic diseases. Maastricht : University of Maastricht, 1986. 131 pp.

Lowest Low Fertility

This workshop was organized by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock under the auspices of EAPS. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss topics, frameworks and methods that can be used in research aiming to better understand and possibly explain the low level of fertility in many Western countries. Fourteen papers were presented and discussed by some 25 participants.
