European Doctoral School of Demography
The EDSD is an eleven-month sponsored program that is offered every year aiming to provide students with an appropriate high-level education in demography to pursue their doctoral studies. Students will acquire a solid knowledge base on the causes and consequences of demographic change, population data, statistical and mathematical demography, as well as modeling, simulation, and forecasting. Many of the school’s courses concentrate on strengthening the quantitative and programming skills of the students. The current location of the school is Barcelona, Spain.
In Memoriam - James Vaupel
Message from Leo van Wissen, EDSD Chairman
It is with large regret that I have to inform you that our EDSD rector Jim Vaupel passed away this weekend, after a short critical period in hospital.
Jim was bigger than life. He was one of the most influential demographers of our time. He was an outstanding researcher and someone who was able to turn great ideas into practice, such as the EDSD. As one of the founding fathers of the EDSD, he has had an immense influence on the careers of new generations of demographers. At the same time, he was the warmest, most enthusiastic, and unpretentious colleague you could imagine.
His demise is a great shock for his colleagues, for the whole community of demographers, and certainly also for the EDSD. We should cherish the privilege to have worked with him.

Learning from the best researchers in our field and being in this network is priceless. EDSD gave me the opportunity to live and study in a city of my dreams. With this program, I now know better what I want to do in the future.

Through the EDSD, I have not only been able to establish myself as an aspiring demographer, but was also able to create a network of peers who will be the future faces of demography.
